Go for the big compound movements, such as Squat, Bench Press, Deadlift, Standing military press.

Also, make sure that you train abs. After all, its a core bodypart and actually plays a part in almost every exercise - important for strength.

i find sets with 8 reps to be most affective for both strength and size

overall strength increases happen more so at around 5-6 reps using compound movements such as nick suggest. Stick to mutli joint movents and forego isolation movements such as lateral raises etc

However, training at this rep range will have little effect in the growth of muscle so best to stick to 8-10 reps and therefore your muscles will grow and allow for incresed strength

do the 3 core exercises benchpress, squat and deadlift.
Stick to doing 3 x8/10 with a few heavy weights at the end, i always mix up my training each week.
Some times i see how much i can lift, other times i stick to 3 x 10.

Basically try and progress each week add a little bit of extra weight.

Also dont be afraid to fail or embrass yourself in the gym if u attempt a weight and u cant lift it.
I alway train in the evening 7 - 9 and up untill lately myself and my training partner where the only people ever in the gym, so i was never afraid to test my strength or fail trying.
Now my gym is abit more busy with about 10 guys in at this time somtimes 15. Im becoming more conscious of not trying to show off or trying heavy weight incase i fail.
Basically i made good gains making sure i always try heavier weights make sure you try aswell.

My simple equation is if you eat more u get more body mass = more strength.

Muscle mass goes hand in hand with strength.
So long as your putting on weight you will gain strength.

put in some bodyweights exercise too .whats the point of being strong if it only lasts for a while.that way u will have strength endurance.so do loads of pushups, dips and chin ups.

I justed wanted to add, that for me the importence of conrolled technique when trainig has really helped improve my strengh especially my core.
I see so many people just swinging the weights all over the place, not even getting a full rep some times, and they train this way all the time.
For me I have been using weight trainig on off for 3 years now, and I was such a weed when I started, now being a big lass at 19 odd stone I always thought I was pretty strong for a girl, but of course my body fat must have been way up there in the high 50's, and when I came to trainig individual musles I was so weak, it really put me off.
Tiny girls half my size were using great big weights and there I was with the tiny ones!
Anyway my point was! I was trained by a really inspiring trainer who was very strict with posture and control, and I have maintained that ever since.
I watched quite a strong looking chap working his legs the other day, his movements were fast and unconrolled. Leg press and extensions. As I work in the gym I was cheeky enough to have a chat to him about it!
He took it in good spirit and challenged me to show him how it should be done! So I did! I matched his weights and reps but held each rep at the top and sqeezed , and controlled the esentric phase too. he was shocked and so was I, it shows what being challenged can make you do. I did about 25kg more than my best! x

when i was bouncing and dropping weights/body weight i was lucky to train for a month without having 2 months of to recover.

Default slow mo or fast fro bodyweight

yes but who you do it slow too for an exercise like pushups??this week im doing three sets of 50 twice a day but i do them quite fast as i think they give mroe power. However do you think that doing them slowly would give more benefits?
