I read this particular study... the reason it is prescribed is to preserve muscle mass. It might sound silly, but if due to weakness, you for example fall and break a bone, that can be fairly serious if you are in a less than ideal state to recover. It's the same with the elderly really, if they get too weak, they are just going to injure themselves.
