Default tough guy

Just filled out my application for Tough Guy Jan 2009. Just wanted to know if anyone has done it before and if anyone had any training tips or could tell me a bit more about what i'm getting myself into. The official site makes it sound hardcore but videos i've seen of it don't make it look too bad.

My brother did it a few years ago, he trained like crazy for it, including jumping in ice cold water and then going for a run etc. Despite all of the training he still said it was the hardest thing he has ever done (he was in the Grenadier Guards for a while so knows a little bit about hardship).

He said to watch out for the hill with the concrete pipes in, as many of these pipes are half-filled with water and blanked off at the end - nightmare as you have 20 blokes behind you...

Good luck with it mate, I dont envy you

thanks for the responses all. Cminoz, can u tell me any more about the kinda drills that ur bro did to prepare himself?? I'm guessing that the hardest part will be dealing with the elements and having to give it some when ur freezing cold and soaking wet! not sure how i can train for that =/

Put it this way mate you're gonna need to increase your stamina.Tyre flipping, sleigh dragging, rope climbing, jogging with weights in ruck sack, practice your wall climb somewhere, get in the shallow end of your local pool and practice power walking through the water.Make sure after your preparation training you rest and eat 3 or 4 days leading up to it and have a damn good carb based meal the night before and a good breakfast on the morning to give yourself a fighting chance. And Nath, make sure you wear gloves!

nice 1 gazz, some good advice. Not sure where i can lay my hands on a tyre but i've already started jogging with weights in my back pack and practicing running up and down hills, the main problem i have is bloody painful shins! I'm hoping the pain will subside after my condidtioning improves and that it isn't the dreaded shin splints. I can quite happily run 8 miles round the park but my shins are pretty painful after. I reckon i need to be comfortable running 10 miles cross country before I can even begin to think about the tough guy. Luckily I have plenty of time to train.

You could always try lifting in a walk in freezer....as soon as you start sweating you will get cold and be straining while lifting ...try it in half hour increments and go from there...Cheers
