This is purely personal opinion Jay, but I always like to see a really good and extensive free weight section. Remember that you're going to progress whilst you're there so make sure that their dumbbells go up to a decent weight (50kg would be a good guide).

As far as the machines go, ( and once again this is just a personal preference) I don't like those machines that are air powered. I don't trust them. The first gym I went to had them and I was shifting big figures. The I joined a gym with a weight stack on all their machines and what I was able to life went down dramatically. So, I'd want to see machines with good stack. Same principle applies as above - make sure they go up to a decent size. Also, make sure there is enough equipment - it's F88king boring waiting around for a machine or rack to become free

The only other thing I would say is check out the staff and the clients. Do the staff know their stuff? Are the clients actually training or using the place as a social?

Bottom line - is it a good bodybuilding gym. From your posts I think you would describe yourself as a bodybuilder - make sure the gym meets that need.

Good luck mate - let us know how you get on

Tell them you are currently a member with a rival and are not willing to pay a joining fee, also you have to give a months notice so you can't join today and they will probally give you a free month just to get you to sign.

really you want a bodybuilding gym mate... usually a bodybuilding gym will be a little more hardcore than say a fitness first.. but it will tend to have much more free weights etc. for you to use.. for instance one gym i train at has no carpets.... and no changing rooms.. however it has lots of lads that compete/box/powerlift etc. train there... and also more free weights and machines than you can shake a stick at!

basically anywhere is good enough to train in.. but if you want to progress then you want to be training at a gym where people compete in bodybuilding.. ask the staff if there is anyone who regularly trains there that competes! one of the best ways to find out is to ask the local doormen where the good place to train are!

I've been trying to find some old magazines because I'm sure I read somewhere that Stuart Core (British heavyweight competitor) has opened his own gym in Torquay - which is just down the road from Paignton isn't it?
