Default Computer memory help!

i have just ordered memory off the internet and i found out that it was the correct one and i have put it in the computer and every thing runs ok, except the computer doesnt detect that i have put the new memory in when i enter the bios menu it still says that there is only 256MB there when i have a 256MB and a 512MB memory sticks inside of the machine, so i let every thing load up on windows then i goto the device manager thing to see if it has updated there and it still says 256MB so i decided to take the 256MB card out and just put the 512MB card in but when i do that i get a beep pattern from the computer in the order:

1-3-3-1 then it stops and nothing happens but when i take all of the memory out of the computer i still get the same beeps from the machine but as soon as it put the 256MB back in the machine it works fine. What is the problem with the computer does any one know what it is and how i can fix it thanks.

also this is some infor bout the computer:
Board: TriGem Computer, Inc. Imperial 1.10
BIOS: Phoenix 6.00 06/17/2003

sounds like dud ram to me. Put just the 512 mb RAM in.

download and extract this: http://www.memtest86.com/memtest86-3.2.iso.zip , and burn it as an image to a disk.

Reboot your PC and run memtest86 - it will look weird but run the tests on there, leave it for about 24 hours. If there are no errors then its not dud ram...

if its not dud ram, you may just need a BIOS update. I tried googling to find an update for your board but i think I need more information, download and run this: http://www.belarc.com/Programs/advisor.exe and paste up the motherboard part of the web page that it creates, then i should be able to get you a link to a new BIOS to flash your motherboard to!

Hmm.... Sounds like compatability issues to me.

When buying ram really you should try to get the exact same one you have bought before to avoid any conflicts. Also different size ram sticks can cause issues and I dont recommend it!!!!

But as nick said do the mem test things. If you happen to have a linux live cd lying about you can use that. All distro's tend to come with it.

Is this an oem machine or built? Could be why nick is having trouble on the bios front for mobo!
