Default Waking up for protein at 4am...? Is this crazy or brilliant?

Kind of an off question ...but have you ever heard of people waking up in the middle of the night to drink protein...? My one buddy is a powerlifter and he sleeps from midnight to 8am every nite. He sets his alarm for 4am so he can wake up in the middle of the nite and drink a protein shake that he has already made waiting for him on his dresser, lol. To what extent is this effective...if at all? He claims that eight hours of sleep each nite is a long time to deprive your body of protein...but is this true...? Doesn't your body need these hours to rest and rebuild itself? Well, anyways...he swears by this method and the dude is huge, also roided to (obvious water retention). I just think your interupting the time in which your body is growing tho...what do you think guys?

ive heard of it...personally I couldn't be bothered to wake up in the middle of sleep to do anything except her ...but seriously, why kill your rest and interrupt your REM sleep to have a shake...the shake will wait until morning...

oh ya..well check this out..i wake up around 9am...after going to bed at 3am...and drink water...or if stomach pain persist my only cure is protien, at this early hour..then im back asleep..in minutes..

of course you cant take like 70grams in the morning...but like 35 is good..and my body wont let me sleep unless i do so every night..(only happens when im sore or during consistant training..)

for me i think its a way for my metabolism to maintain muscle growth..im an ectomorph

I am one of the unlucky ones that wakes up several times during the night, and for as long as i've been at university this has pretty much been the case.

So say i go to sleep at 1am, i'll take me pre-bed shake and supps then. At about 330am i'll be awake again for a trip to the loo, i'll take 4 BCAAs (already placed my the bedside) before going to sleep). At about 5am i'll wake up again, either for another wee or just for no reason, i'll have either some more bcaas, or a scoop of whey in water which is already set up. Then i'll wake up at 8 or 9 ready for the day!

i'm never starving in the morning which must be a good sign. (ohhhh.. but i still eat lots)

I wake a couple of times but its because I need the toilet, if i drink less water come bedtime I sometimes just wake the once.. I remember years ago I never used to wake in the middle of the night but was always busting for the loo in the morning.....funny that.

And i don't bother with whey or anything either.

don't u feel like its a wasted opportunity to get protein in?

i'm in a constant battle with myself to stop feeling like i'm 'burning away', if i wake up in the middle of the night i'm often relieved because it means i'll get a protein injection..

Lots of great bodybuilders don't eat during the night so I don't see why I should, not saying that it isn't a good thing to do.
