Default how to mix protein

Ive got whey protein, plain non flavoured, obviously I do it with milk, but if I havnt got a grinder with me at the time, can i not just shake it in the bottle, when i tried, the protein was still at the bottom of the flask, so i ended up just grinding it. any tips
