Default Want to cancel membership too!

I am really sorry to have to come on here as a new member, but I've been trawling the internet and its forum to try and find people who may have found themselves in the same position as myself.

David Lloyd have trounced me with their three month cancellation policy and I can see that I'm not alone in thinking that this is completely unnaceptable.

I do not remember this being part of the agreement. If it was, I don't remember it being brought up during the induction.

So it was a shock to receive a letter this morning stating that my membership would end in three months. The reason I cancelled my membership was because I've fallen on hard times and I will not be able to pay. The money that David Lloyd is taking from my account by direct debit is causing mayhem to my overdraft and as each of these debits are rejected I incur a 30 bounce fee each time. So I will have to cancel the direct debit, but then incur the wrath of David Lloyd, who will then criminalize me for not paying.

I can't believe my local gym can suddenly cause me so much stress. I thought this kind of behaviour was reserved for credit cards and banks! I've never had a gym have this kind of policy or this kind of bloody mindedness. I've belonged to many other gyms and they have been pleasant and personalised - I can't believe that my local gym has turned from a sanctuary to a corporate monster simply because I wish to leave!

What on earth can I do about this?

Thanks

Julian

PS I have started an online petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/shaftedl/petition.html and you can email me shaftedbydl@mac.com if you have any of your own stories you wish to tell me. I'm not a journalist, I'm just a very angry thirtysomething having a financial crisis! Someones got to do something! Watchdog here I come....

Default David Lloyd

Hi there,

I havent posted on this forum in a very long time as ive just been mainly reading the information and trying to build my knowledge as when i joined i was a newbie to BB.

Anyway this is one area i feel i can help!

I use to be a memeber of the david lloyd in chigwell, paying roughly at the most 65 a month as it was only a mile from my house and was a decent gym (I have since changed to Physicals!). However I was soon off to uni, so i cancelled my membership. But i was having some back problems at the time so i said to the lady that i was leaving for this reason. She said fine and asked for a medical note, which i provided. I heard nothing for a year and a half, in which time i cancelled my direct debit. On hearing from them i recieved a letter (at my parents house not mine) saying they have reactivated my membership (without my asking) and were unable to take money...bloddy cheek! I then wrote back later saying I had moved to bristol and cancelled my membership and basically f off. She then claimed to never have recieved my letter and only a medical note (both notes were given at the same time in person!) saying that i wouldnt be able to excercise for a year. After several angry letters and calls from me she sent a debt collectors note.

There was/is no way to get out of this as i did sign a contract saying i would pay 3 months membership to leave the gym regardless of whether i could use the facilities.

I then complained and complained and ended up having to get another doctors note saying i couldnt excercise for a lot longer due to complication.

In the end "intrests of good faith" she said she will waive the 3 months, even though i gave the gym a letter ages ago.

So to sum all that crap up, u are in a contract that u signed so legally there is nothing u can do. Complain enough u might some where, or get a doctors note and or put ure membership on hiatus (i think they may charge for this though).

Hope that helps.
Anil

Erm, I'm not as free as I thought I was

I've had a letter from some debt collectors, even though I had a letter from my David Lloyd General Manager over two months ago:
