important to note in the article that razg posted:

We studied eight smokers (> or =20 cigarettes/day for > or =20 years) a

so this is pretty heavy smokers.

for most others, me inc, 20 ish a week, for <2 years , dont think its gonna be anti-anabolic (aside from long term probs)

however it definitely decreases your VO2 max which might limit your endurance to train.

Boarder mate,
Before you attempt to quit again its imperative that you understand why you smoke.Of course you will know that it's the nicotine you are addicted too.But how and why?

Nicotine,i always thought was a mild sedative, and the reason peole smoke to chill themselves out.But it turns out its a stimulant!Whatever its effects are,its because of them that you are addicted. You smoke to relax, calm down and de-stress whatever, and are dependant on that smoke to acheive those feelings. You need to replace nicotine as your 'comfort zone' with something else.So think. What else do you do in your daily life that achieves relaxation?Find that thing and use it to replace smoking.
I know for me the first time I quit and was successfull for three years I replaced cigs with beef jerky. Cost the same but it got me over the intial hurdle of smoking outta habit ( while driving, after I ate, or after sexuall intercourse ) Instead I grabbed for the4 beef and by the time I was done knawing on it the craving had passed. I also used it in conjunction with the patch and the combination of the to is what I believe truelly help. Bottom line if your not accually ready to commit to quiting no method will help.

Having worked in a smokers clinic, I can tell you know your more then welcome to keep trying at a clinic to stop smoking (not everyone stops the first time trying)

A drug came out of the end of 2006, called champix; its only shown to be 44% effective in stopping smokers (oh 44% thats not alot) actually it is. Now if you were to go on that + be an athlete what do you think your chances are then?

Only side effects are nausea.

Worth looking into smoker people
