Default Whole foods better than shakes?

Often hear this is the case but can any one give me an explanation as to why?

as a whole yes food is better.

i.e. a healthy balanced meal containing all the nutrients you need will be better than a meal replacement shake.

however a meal replacement shake is much better than say... a frozen chicken curry.... cos it will probably have more nutrients in it.

whole foods also digest slower meaning in general the body gets a much better timed release of nutrients...

also, a protein shake, is simply protein.. with nothing really else added... its basically a chicken breast in a drink... its not a meal... just a protein source.

there are times however when supplements (protein shakes etc. etc.) are a much better option than whole foods!

we all use supplements... but as the word says.. it is simply to supplement our diets.. they should not be relied upon over food! (unless you have some kind of medical condition) they are a solid addition to any sensible bodybuilding or fitness diet though...

have a look at the articles section at www.extremenutrition.co.uk ...theres plenty of articles on there which will go into this subject more deeply and hopefully clear this up for you.

also not all supplement companies put the same quality of ingredients into their supplements.. so just because something has the same name.. it doesnt mean its the same quality of product!

Excellant post Lee....

i must add that due to my job i use MRP shakes when i diet for comps with great effects, whole foods are better but supplements are getting so good now a days that as long as you use sparingly they can be a great addition....
