Hi Paul

There are a few clear principles that you should stick to:

- Smaller, more regular meals are better than less regular, large meals.
- Foods which contain simple sugars, and saturated fats, should be kept to a minimum
- Your daily calorie-intake should be lower than what you burn off, but not so much lower that your body senses its in famine and slows your metabolic rate down.

Other ideas which may help:

- Reducing the total number of carbohydrates in the day is effective in bringing down the calorie amount for the day, and causing a ketosis-effect ( see here http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/en.aspx?articleid=221 )

- Do cardio, preferably on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. This will raise your heart rate for the entire day (and therefore burn more calories).

- Do some muscle/weight-training. Increased muscular mass (LBM) again will lead to increased calorific burning.

- 6 meals a day is a good target

Foods that you want to stay clear of:
-Drinks containing sugar, i.e. cokes, lemonades, ribena etc - go for the diet alternative
-crisps, doughnuts, pastry, chocolate bars - these go without saying
-too much fruit - large bananas contain almost 200 calories ! Also, the sugars in fruit are generally fructose, which do not help you burn fat, quite the opposite.
-Milk - switch to skimmed milk only, and limit yourself to an absolute maximum of 2 pints/day.

Foods you should eat lots of:
- Egg whites
- Tuna chunks
- Chicken/turkey breast
- Other seafood
- Other lean meats
- Salads and vegetables

Nick
