Default mental toughness

Hi i would like to know if there are any ways that you can toughen yourself mentally. Also what is a good way to train yourself in not feeling physical pain?punching yourself? And how do you stop yourself from having fear. Beacause in a fight situation fear is your biggest enemy as it might freeze you and i want to get rid of that.thanks

the sure fire way to stay calm during intense situations is practice.

for mental clarity/toughness try meditation, seriously.

I would never say that fear is your worst enemy... fear is probably your greatest allie for fear will save your life. Fear is a natural animal instinct, a warning of pending threat or danger and the bodies way of preparing to handle such a situation.

There are a few good books , again Geoff Thompson, springs to mind as an author who has thoroughly covered this topic.

Just remember that when confronted with a conflict situation your body responds. eg, your hands get sweaty, your heart beats faster , you get tunnel vision. Now iit maybe that you are recognising this as "falling to bits", but why not recognise it as being prepared for action, that you are in control. Your hearts beating faster to pump blood to those muscle your going to be using, your vision is tunneled to soley concentrate on the threat at hand,, you are warming up ready for action.

As poom rightly said EXPERIENCE ! Because the way to over come fear is to confront it, face your fears and become stronger.

Have to agree punching yourself will achieve very little, except a visit from the men in white coats!

All the best M8

I am unsure if i am strong enough and thats my insecurity as if i get ina fight i dont know if i can handle it. Would getting in a fight would get rid of this fear of the unexpected?lol i probably sound a bit stupid but hey this is about askign questions so here i go

i heard about these guys who just get hit hard with fists, metal bars and dont even feel the pain. they can punch concrete walls hard and not feel a thing.that seems great.i think being able to be strong enough to not feel physical pain is good. (lol before laughing at that, do some research cos in the world of martial arts there exists guys like that)

well its important in life to have as much knowledge as possible.its the kind of skill that is useful in any sport, even bodybuilding, hell even in life. i am thinking of getting into mma one day but right now i JUST want to know. Dont worry, im not gona go out an dshoot hundreds of people in the street or something, its not something that i would use in a negative manner but just to help in making myself better physically and mentally. Because its not just important to have that six pack you have. Its more important to have mental strength. However looks like nobody has any info on that skill here so im gona have to go look somewhere else.

can i just say its not about not feeling pain, its about being able to deal with pain that makes the difference.without pain life means nothing, you get no feed back no imput, how are you going to achieve anything if you have no sensations of your enviroment, its like driving a car with your eyes closed, you would just be an accident waiting to happen.these martial artist you talk about feel pain,i have seen these people when it has gone wrong and the bleed the same as you or i,all they have done is spend most of there life dedicated to a life style that allows the them to do extraordinary things, but in order to do that they have learnt how to over come pain with proper training and years of mental disipline, and that is the key to success in any sport or profession.
