Default How many of you started with martial arts?

How many of you got into bodybuilding through martial arts?

I started with Ju Jitsu but couldn't always get there in time and wasn't allowed on the mat if I was a minute late so would go into the gym and use weights.

My mate was a very good kick boxer and he worked out with weights (think John Rambo physique) and I wanted to look a bit like he did and wanted to be able to scrap like him too!

I stuck with the weights, went to freestyle kick boxing and boxercise to build my fitness, because of the kick boxing and boxercise I lost a lot of fat and decided to keep dieting and have a go at competing.

I did compete but gave up the kick boxing and boxercise after show 1 so I could get more mass on. I wish I'd never stopped my martial arts and boxercise, i was fit, flexible and looked and felt great. My flexibility sucks now and i need an aqualung after sex because my fitness is so poor.

Anyone else similar?

The boxing training must have stood you well for your rugby training Sean, that kind of fitness doesn't come easy and must be a blessing during rugby training/matches.

heh actually i went the other way, i was very skinny around age 16, got into weights and body building for about 3 years, then i moved to boxing,

Sure it's not a "martial art" , but anyway it is combat based.

i always enjoyed the feeling of strength more than the aesthetic part of weightlifting and body building, so i looked for a way to use it,
i chose boxing and found that strength doesn't really do you that much good but it of course doesn't hurt, boxing seems to have stuck, and now although i still do some weights, it has become a secondary priority.

I’m glad I can appreciate both things and what drives people , I have respect for the boxer , who has a lot of heart and conditioning/endurance, and I have respect for the body builder, who wants to become a powerful beast thing and lift up 100kg with one finger, both require alot of dedication and drive.

always used weights but boxed for about 4 years and still worked out with weights to improve my conditioning. got addicted to weights after seeing the difference it made to my physique, now after over ten years weight training six of which were hardcore bodybuilding im now addicted to vale tudo/mma and only use weights for conditioning twice a week. feel tiny now having dropped three stone in weight but my fitness is the best its been for years and ground game improves weekly!

I started in martial arts, and will end in martial arts. However, I just couldn't ignore the benefits that adopting a bodybuilding type lifestyle had to offer.

Lifting weights, and watching my diet like a bodybuilder helped me appreciate the sacrifice and dedication these men and women put into their chosen lifestyle.

Well I started doing tai cwon do(however that is spelt!) 6 years ago, but at the time I was so fat I could barely get through the warm ups, so I stopped going!
I did do a boxercise course though recently and now I am really into the idea of learning a martial art, now that I am fitter!!

I was in the same boat. In fact I've battled with my weight all my life.

When I was fighting Thai, about 9 years ago I had a 30" waist and was in the best shape of my life. Although I looked a bit strange with 28" thighs, and 16 1/2" arms.

Right now I'm more like the third Mitchell brother than Ramon Decker.
