IMHO as a martial art it lacks the depth of traditional styles (at their own addmitance WAKO) kickboxing is a sport derived from karate / taekwondo - it was established to give practioners of those arts the opportunity to fight full contact, in doing so they took from those arts what they required, leaving out the aspects of kata/tuls and traditional self defence work. I have no-problem with Kick bboxing at all, I cross train at a Kickboxing gym and have fought under their rules. The fact is Tthough TKD is a martial Art, that traces its routes back to 50BC. So, I find it hard to see how you can dismiss it after a taster session or 2. Also if you tried WTF style , you were again trying out a sport derived from a Martial Art , ( without going to much into history & politics) WTF is the style of Tae kwon do as seen at the Olympics & does use kicks the percentage of the time, it is dynamic & full contact. ITF style tae kwon do is a Martial art, where the students practices sparring ( 50-50 use of hand and foot ) destruction techniques, tuls and self defence, as well as learning about the history of the art and korean terminology. Whilst trying to train and live life using the tenants of Courtesy integrity- perseverance-self control - indomnitable spirit. For your interest Tae ( the foot or to kick) Kwon (to destroy with the hand/fist) do ( art way or method) Therefore TKD = The art of foot and hand fighting - speaks for it self really. So, and sorry to go on again, It really does depend on what you want from your chosen sport , or martial art , if you want a great workout, learn to kick and punch, test youself, get in shape and compete _ kickboxing , may well be the answer. As for me , well I merely wanted a whole way of life, Way of the warrior and all that!! Respect Tee kay dee |

What if somone posted on a website whats best an Electrician or a plumber ? Well IMHO and without being too blunt, that's about as stupid as this original question. And those people who want to jump in with both feet, and are saying I'm going to learn Jui Jitsu , Taekwondo, Kick Boxing, well I wouldn't try and be a jack of all trades, better the master of one! If I was getting my house rewired I would want a qualified proffessional , an expert in his field - and if I want to learn a Martial Art same goes. Cheers TKD |

| Under Construction | I've done alot of both, and sparred with different world champions in both arts, and in my opinion a good kickboxer can wade throught elaborate kicks and once in close finish it pretty quick. Kickboxing's a harder sport in my opinion. And it is just my opinion. |

Used properly it can be very affective. i am a 3rd dan in taekwondo and yes nowadays it can be all aboput points but if you get a good teaching and not a posser then you can learn some good stuff. i also studied karate for about 7 years and the and got my black belt in that too. also another very good art to learn. i think if you wish to learn self defence do an art like judo, aikido or jeet kundo. in the really most people dont stand and kick or punch. they through there arms around abit and usually end up wrestling until it gets broken up or a lucky punch gets thrown. tips for being a good fighter- 1- get a good teacher, one who is about the art and not the money and fame (very hard to find) 2- look into different arts, research them before even going to class. pick one that you think suits you. 3- look at your self and try to think what you strengths are, im not that tall or built like an ox. i can kick 6ft odd, it looks nice, but when will you use it on the street. however i can punch well fast. it never used to be hard but through training a little guy and punch hard. oh and also i can run quick and for a long time. 4- be patient, it takes time to learn to be good. when i was a brown belt i thought i was god but it wasnt till i got put in hospital that it made see how good i was. BEST POINT EVER 5- the best way to learn is to use your self. you have got everything that you attacker will have. if it hurts you it will probably hurt them. i ait saying go round and hit yourself. but use a mirror look how you react see if your block really covers your body, if you punch can hit its target. etc. Remember martial arts originally was a form of training not only for the body but for the mind. first you have took at where you are and what you want to become in both areas. |

| Under Construction | Actually I also think it's a myth that you can't use kicks on the street. Fair enough if you are face to face in a bar with an inch between you it's implausible, but on the street there is as much room as there is in a ring. It just depends how and where it kicks off. Jumping spinning kicks aren't sensible, but its easy to throw a high roundhouse off the front leg straight on the button if they're not expecting it, but if you prance around like Bruce Lee for 30 seconds before hand, you're kind of telegraphing your intentions. (This is of course, assuming you have to get into a fight in the first place- It's far better to try and avoid it of course.) |
