i was shown taekwondo in the army, it is useful in some situations for getting out of holds & getting people under control but i wouldnt rate it as the best out there
But i also boxed for my regiment & then for collyhurst & moston boxing club, sparred with Pat Barret, Robby Reid, Micheal Gomez , Micheal Brodie , Athony Farnell etc & the like...stopped boxing around 1994 & started weight training to build up as i was doing the doors.
I boxed at welter weight belive it or not at 10st 4lb....LOL
I done the doors for a good 6 years.

like devilsquest said a good placed headbut will win every time

I used to do Taekwondo for a number of years, and it helped me out in alot of fights. Both are useful in a streetfighting scenario as when you regularly practice ANY martial art, it becomes second nature, so when someone provides a stimulus (ie throws a punch), you respond lightning quick without having to think.

I would go with Taekwondo as it also includes throws and weapons (at advanced levels) as well as kicks, elbows and punches, but both are useful in a fight against Joe Bloggs. That said, in pro fighting you might wanna take up one of them as well as jui jitsu depends who's ass you wanna kick!

Doesnt matter that much what you learn imo. Just make sure its sparring heavy so you can get used to taking a punch and giving one out too, the biggest benefit believe it or not i think i have got from boxing is being hit in the head alot so i know how it feels to be hit , and from this learning how to take it.

certin bodies and minds flow better with certin styles and of all but few martal arts can fit someone to use. In the end you return to instinct in a fight. You would have to start a new way of thinking with any art. I would scrap the kick boxing and just learn the basics of combat. As far as taking someone to the ground and not gettting hit. Sounds simple but your much more deadly if you dont have to use your fists..

My favortie move called the "dope fiend" in street terms does all you need to kock out the opponent with out leaving any marks or allow to over work yourself.. I think to be invincible to a hit and to only use chokes is more refined of a skill then just kicking someone in the shins once a week at the gym...

Best training I reckon if military martial arts training as its no nonsense get your enemy down!

Been wathcing 24! lol

However I have been impressed with the shaolin monks ive met one who used to train the army in china and he taught them to kill fast!

But then look at bruce lee he used the most effective movements instead of doing all the fancy lardidaah! Perhaps to the first question try do both and incorporate what you learn from both classes and use one another together.

me done!

imho tae kwon do is useless as a form of real self defence, the movement and kicks are designed to score points more than anything else. the few times i sparred with my mate who was a black belt in tkd i found it ridiculously easy to punch him senseless as all he did was bounce up and down trying to get long range kicks off, giving me perfect timing to get inside his guard and strike him with my hands.
now his argument was that kickboxing was shite because they kicked off the back foot! think about it, whats a more powerful kick.... exactly, the one that comes full force from your back leg. dont see many footballers scoring goals from the half way line with a snap kick from their front foot do you.
anyone with any real grounding or experience in street fighting will tell you that it kicks off from talking distance not jumping up and down and trying to lash out fancy roundhouse kicks to joe the maddies head ffs! kickng above the handline in the street is VERY risky as your sacrificing speed balance and distance. watch any mma events the most obvious one being the UFC see many tkd guys there? but plenty kickboxers and mhuay thai fighters, imo go for kickboxing or mhuay thai as you will be forced to fight at close range at least some of the time and will get an idea of proper scrapping not scoring points.
add in a lot of ground work and your well on your way to being a well rounded fighter.

kcikboxing and muay thai. u learn how to use your elbows, kness, legs and fists. your elbows and your knees are your most powerful weapons especially at close range. muay thai is better than boxing. fists might be faster but feet have longer range and when done properly have a huge knockout power. Muay thai no rules competition rocks lol
