Default Smoking - BodyBuilding

Here is an article i read earlier:

Smoking and Bodybuilding - Alcohol and Bodybuilding - Effects on Physical Fitness

The bit where it says Smoking kills cells, including muscle cells. is this true??

I know all the health hazards are true which it states but i didnt realise it directly eats up your muscles??

Can someone clarify this please.

Smoking will directly reduce muscle growth as well as nicotine being an appetite suppressant.

Quote:
Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab. 2007 Sep;293(3):E843-8.

Smoking impairs muscle protein synthesis and increases the expression of myostatin and MAFbx in muscle.

Petersen AM, Magkos F, Atherton P, Selby A, Smith K, Rennie MJ, Pedersen BK, Mittendorfer B.

Centre of Inflammation and Metabolism, Department of Infectious Diseases and Copenhagen Muscle Research Centre, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Smoking causes multiple organ dysfunction. The effect of smoking on skeletal muscle protein metabolism is unknown. We hypothesized that the rate of skeletal muscle protein synthesis is depressed in smokers compared with non-smokers. We studied eight smokers (> or =20 cigarettes/day for > or =20 years) and eight non-smokers matched for sex (4 men and 4 women per group), age (65 +/- 3 and 63 +/- 3 yr, respectively; means +/- SEM) and body mass index (25.9 +/- 0.9 and 25.1 +/- 1.2 kg/m(2), respectively). Each subject underwent an intravenous infusion of stable isotope-labeled leucine in conjunction with blood and muscle tissue sampling to measure the mixed muscle protein fractional synthesis rate (FSR) and whole body leucine rate of appearance (Ra) in plasma (an index of whole body proteolysis), the expression of genes involved in the regulation of muscle mass (myostatin, a muscle growth inhibitor, and MAFBx and MuRF-1, which encode E3 ubiquitin ligases in the proteasome proteolytic pathway) and that for the inflammatory cytokine TNF-alpha in muscle, and the concentration of inflammatory markers in plasma (C-reactive protein, TNF-alpha, interleukin-6) which are associated with muscle wasting in other conditions. There were no differences between nonsmokers and smokers in plasma leucine concentration, leucine rate of appearance, and plasma concentrations of inflammatory markers, or TNF-alpha mRNA in muscle, but muscle protein FSR was much less (0.037 +/- 0.005 vs. 0.059 +/- 0.005%/h, respectively, P = 0.004), and myostatin and MAFBx (but not MuRF-1) expression were much greater (by approximately 33 and 45%, respectivley, P < 0.05) in the muscle of smokers than of nonsmokers. We conclude that smoking impairs the muscle protein synthesis process and increases the expression of genes associated with impaired muscle maintenance; smoking therefore likely increases the risk of sarcopenia.

Quote from that site :- "* Research also shows that cigarette smoking probably damages cells in the testes - the cells that synthesize testosterone. Testosterone levels within the body govern the muscle growth process from training. Thus, smoking may well hinder optimal testosterone production and interfere with the body’s capacity to build muscle."

Of course the major side effect of smoking is death. That's not good for your muscles either lol
I doubt smoking significantly 'kills' muscle cells, enuff to notice that is. But the oxygen depletion can't help eh!
If you'd like an excuse to keep on smoking tho check out Markus Rhul shopping on youtube, one of the biggest (retired?) BBers out there and he's chugging away like a SOB.

Cigarette smoke contains Hydrogen Cyanide which is of course a poison. The same poison that was used to kill 6 million people during the 1940's.When Cyanide enters the body it attaches itself to red blood cells via iron molecules i beleive, weighing down those cells which of course are carrying oxygen to the internal organs etc, thus effectively suffocating you from the inside out!Ok the Cyanide levels in cigs are'nt of the same concentrated levels of Waffen SS shower time, but just the sheer thought of having that sh*te running around my blood-stream makes me want to re-enact the D-day landings on my local corner shop!

Besides from all the obviouse reason not to smoke ( which I did, quit for 3 yrs. , and now smoke again ) one thing I immediatly notice when I quit was I no longer woke at 3:00 AM with a coughing attack that lasted for 20 minutes and was only semi stopped with a emergency glass of water, wich in turn made it difficult to obtain my much needed 8 hours of sleep.

Boarder mate,
Before you attempt to quit again its imperative that you understand why you smoke.Of course you will know that it's the nicotine you are addicted too.But how and why?

Nicotine,i always thought was a mild sedative, and the reason peole smoke to chill themselves out.But it turns out its a stimulant!Whatever its effects are,its because of them that you are addicted. You smoke to relax, calm down and de-stress whatever, and are dependant on that smoke to acheive those feelings. You need to replace nicotine as your 'comfort zone' with something else.So think. What else do you do in your daily life that achieves relaxation?Find that thing and use it to replace smoking.
