The origin of this myth is that the kidneys increase their output of products related to protein metabolism. There has been a variety of literature reviewing whether or not this is problematic - the conclusion has been that their is no evidence that a high protein diet is deleterious to the health of the kidneys.

Wasn't the reference study in question done on the affect of a high protein diet in people with a pre-existing kidney problem...?

I'm not referring to a particular study, however in those individuals with compromised kidneys, a reduction in protein intake can lead to a higher filtration rate. People have erroneously drawn the conclusion from this that protein is bad for your kidneys. There is no reason to believe that for anyone other than those with compromised function, protein intake is an issue.

Drinking more water when on high protein diet will serve to reduce any risk at all.

Kidney problems normally come from dehydration of sorts. A while ago I had an elevated urea problem due to drinking loads of diet pepsi and not enough water.
