These quotes are from 9Pack on UK-M. I no longer do Wide Grip Pullups having read these:

Quote:
The wider the grip, the less stretch is placed on the lats as the arms are not fully adducted towards the midline of the body. It can also be potentially very risky on the shoulders when performing very wide grip chins so please be careful bud, you may be storing up trouble for the future.
Quote:
I'm only going to say this one more time; wide grip does not automatically equate to wide lats. It's a complete fallacy. The wider the grip, the more danger you put the shoulder joint in and the less stretch you put the lats under at the midpoint. Period.

The lats have one major function, to draw the arms back. Rows, rows, rows, deadlifts & rows. Pulldowns are also good, but narrow to moderate grip is best. Now I don't care if Franco or anyone else for that matter did wide grip chins & had a good back. They would have most certainly done heavy rowing movements as the staple movement so their lats would have been good anyway.

plus, most people can't do more than 3 pullups. especially if they weigh over 15 stone.

True. And those that can do more than 3 rarely do them from a full stretch .

I'm a big fan of weighted wide grip pull-ups, with an arm position equating to around 90 degrees when standing.

I personally LOVE wide grip chin ups, although I don't go that wide, prob shoulder width or slightly wider. The grips on the lat pull down are probably wider than I the grip I use for pull ups. I do use the lat pull down if I want to do like 30 reps but if i want to go heavy, i'll just hold a dumbell between my feet while doin the pull ups. I'm sure Tall is right tho, he ussually is, but for me PULL UPS PULL UPS PULL UPS.

Oh yeah i do love straight arm pull downs to finish of my lats.

Too wide and i can't achieve a full pull and it does cause a strain on my shoulders.Moderately wide, yes both on chins and pull downs.Ive been using the parallel grip attachment for a change from wide and close grip lately though.

the correct grip for pull downs and chins is apparently shoulder width + 1 handspace.

dependent on the weight used theyre basically the same exercise.

if you cant do front pulldowns with your body weight as a poundage theres no point in trying them as a chin.

I've used both. Just recently moved onto the pull downs for a change. Think i prefer the pull ups though. I did think the wider grip put more concentration on the lats.. but obviously not. You learn something new everyday

Cheers lads
