I find it easier to balance with a BB or DBs

I prefer dbs myself although after viewing Gazz's post with the filthy Bulgarian lunges, I've been doing those with a barbell. I don't like doing them holding a plate - just my tuppence worth.

Standard lunges i prefer bar on shoulders its a bit like tight rope walking in that respect you can use the bar to balance and add weight accordingly. If you're doing some of Nath's filthy Bulgarian lunges then db's are the safest bet because if you do lose it then all you do is just drop the db's and fall over, you're not going to launch a bar through the air and kill a fellow gym patron! I only ever use a plate on my chest when im warming down from squats, never used one for lunges.
