Good for you....if your competing as an amateur you must have a licence,if you have a licence you must have a trainer.....stick to what he tells you mate,if you are training specifically for boxing then personally i think you are overdoing it with the strength/fitness...you are only boxing 3 rounds, concentrate on your technical ability, pad and bag work....strength and fitness can be achieved a lot quicker than technical ability so id concentrate on basics, the rest will follow.
Also, power of punch coming from the legs is a myth,if you are technically proficient your footwork will be correct allowing the whole body to deliver power whether it be a jab, hook or uppercut...if your footwork is slow or out no amount of leg power will deliver the punch correctly......tommy hearns had legs like spindles but had a devistating punch due to good footwork and technical ability.
All the best

hey leglock.. yes I have a trainer, he is very old school (as are most amature trainers) and like many older guys in boxing doesn't really believe in weights being beneficial to boxers. I tend to believe however done in the right way they can really benefit boxers strength, power and speed.
Ricky Hattons strength/conditioning coach and nutritionist Kerry Kayes (former national bodybuilding champion) is a great believer in weights being used in boxing. If you look at any top pro's they are all doing weight training routines to make the stronger or powerful boxers.
I totally agree that you have to have the technical ability first, Im working on all these different things and who knows where it will go.

Its not really old school training mark, its just the right way of doing things, your trainers right....remember ricky hatton is at the top of his sport,so yes weight training should be a part of his training.....for somebody starting off its not...your trainer obviously thinks you are capable enough or you wouldnt have had 3 fights yet...but you must remember a 3 fight amateur is not going to train the same as a pro....we see young lads every day coming into the gym who cant wait to lift weights rocky balboa style,we tell them the same, put the weights down and concentrate on boxing for now.
What gym/area are you out of mate ? its ok im just being nosey lol.....all the best.

I definately agree with what you're saying about not just jumping into weights to try and benefit the boxing. The thing is I trained with weights for 3years before I ever went boxing, I dont want to stop doing them altogether as I feel I'll lose strength and this will have a negative effect. Im in norfolk mate.. do you train or box for an essex club.

I dont know how you can maintain that schedule Mark, i'd be falling to pieces . . .

Imagine lack of recovery might be your limitation . . . . you might want to get a sauna (help the muscles unwind)

Swimming aught to build up stamina in your shoulders, . . . . and its free of impact/injury etc.

I'd imagine also that you dont want to bulk up ? no sense in going up in the weight scale unless you're constantly dieting to make the weight . . . so generally you'd want to keep the weights down, . . & the reps up?

yeah the training schedule can be hard! I try to give myself a week off every once in a while to recover as much as possible..
swimming is something I am going to try and start doing soon, I will probably put in in place of one of my runs and see how it goes.
I dont want to bulk up as you say I dont want to go up in weight, however I do go for a fairly heavy weight and rep range around 8 reps as I do weights to gain muscle strength.
Boxing training is mostly geared towards muscle endurance so then I lift weights I use this to work on my strength.
My diet I try and aim for maintenance calories nothing excess so even doing a rep range of say 6-8 reps I wont be building muscle.
