Default Crunches on a foam roller

Saw this guy at the gym today doing crunches with a foam roller under his lower back and his butt off the floor.

He was a big guy - looked like he'd just recently competed.

What's the benefit? Is it not bad for you back? Never seen anyone do them like that before.

Just saw a infomercial on this last night but I didn't pay to much attention to what the benifits were. I'll try and pay more attention next time but you will probably get your answer before than.

Do you mean reverse crunches? Was he just raising his legs and butt off the floor? They're actually better for your back. You're not putting as much pressure on the lower part of your spine by using your legs as the resistance as opposed to using your torso. The foam rollers just a cushion.Swiss ball crunches are a better exercise, bearing in mind you dont have any back issues.

No - they were just regular crunches/sit ups, with the foam roller directly under his lower back.

Was he balancing on the roller with nothing touching the floor?

No his butt was just raised slightly off the ground, but his shoulders were on the ground. He then just crunched up onto the foam roller. Odd one, eh?

Well if it works!

Maybe someone should give him a flyer for gravity boots!

Looked kind of pointless to me, if not bad for your lower back. Maybe I'm just paranoid when it comes to back...
