I've re-read my training article, and made the 20reps part a bit clearer for you.

Sorry Fenton, I've been snowed under with work so couldn't add to this thread.
I just do one set of 20 deadlifts to make sure my back is ready and then do the 5x5 but increase the weight each set, the first couple of sets seem easy but at least I know that I'm suffieciently warmed up. How much do u weigh? 20 chins is bloody good going, one of my aims to hit 20 chins, I'm nearly there, the other day I managed 13 widegrip chins with an 8 kg dumbell in my backpack.

Hey, I weigh about 85kg, the 20 chins is my aim, I haven't done that day yet so I might not make that many! I will go for the 5x5 on chins, squats and deadlifts see how that goes.

When I started I struggled to do ten chins, I decided to try something I'd read in the Arnie book which was just to try and do 50 chins, whether it took 5 sets of 10 or 10 sets of 5, just whatever it took to get the 50 done, gradually u get the 50 done in decent time. Once I could do 10 in a row, I discovered that my first set was ok but I really struggled to repeat the 10, so I began a different tactic, I'd do a set of 10, rest for a minute, do a set of nine, rest, a set of 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 etc. It sounds quite a lot and I'm sure people will tell u that its too much, this is just what worked for me in improving the amount of chins I can do.

I've never tried to do 50, I will see how hard they are tomorrow, you could use the machine with the weight assist and work your way harder. But yeah I want to be able to do dips and chins without the machine assist quite well.

Nath's hit on a pretty important point thar.If dropping the rep's and upping the set's will get you through then so be it.

20 chins is a hellofa goal.
its one thing to bang out a quick 20 but something else to do them in good form.

I was training with a marine who was making me pause at the top for 5 secs then pause at the bottom for 5 secs, apparently u need to be able to do 6-10 of these to get in.

Just to throw my two cents in. Follow the advice of concentrating on form maybe more so than having the mindset of how many. If you needed to do a certain # for maybe a civil exam or something like that you could incorporate kip-ups but this will not help in gaining muscle or strenghth.

Just did the bicep/back day today and feel pretty worked out. Managed 3 sets of chins, then used the assist on 5kg on the last 2 sets. My form is pretty poor too as never really done chins.

Is there anything else worth doing apart from seated row, on the machine at our gym it is too wide and not really possible to have palms facing upwards. you can have palms facing inwards, would that be enough? Can the seated row be done on the cables somehow??
