Default Should I avoid the gym when I have the cold?

I haven't been to the gym this week cause I have a cold, am coughing a lot and have a sore throat.

Am I just making excuses or is this sensible?

Exactly as Nath says.Your system's more concerned with fighting the virus than building muscle.Going to the gym with cold's,flu and other bug's achieves nothing really. You'll just prolong the illness by making yourself weaker.Rest and recouperate.

Yeah - didn't think I'd make many friends.

I'm on a low carb diet too - should I go back to carbs too?

Workouts of any kind ruin your immune system, the sheer exhaustion you put your body through makes you more vulnerable to illness so it is to be expected.
Going to the gym will only weaken this more, just get as much rest as possible and wrap up warm!

Loads of glutamine to help your immune system, along with vit. C and zinc. Muscle ache with flu is your body stealing amino acids to make anti-bodies. Lots of catabolic action.
