Default Warm ups

Hello all

What does everyone here do for a warm-up before a heavy workout?

I was advised by a trainer to just to a single set of something like dips or press ups. Is this OK?

This is a tough one as everyone is different... Some people would go for a jog, I tend to do lighter weights on the first exercise I'm doing for a large muscle group until I feel ready to move to my work set.

So if I was deadlifting I might do 5-8 @ 50kgs, 5-8 @ 80kgs, and then move the weight up towards my working set.

I wouldn't warm up on dips if I was deadlifting...

I generally do something to get the blood flowing through the target area, then 1 "prep set", which will involve a weight that is taxing but not exhaustive.
Then its the all out set.

I like a breif run to warm the body then a good stretch, maybe a few press ups then I'll do a light set of about 20 reps of whichever exercise I'm starting with.

i do a 5 minute quick walk, and a warm up set of 10-12 reps @ about half my lifing weight, or on bigger groups 1/3 then 2/3 then full lifts.

i never used to do the walk but find it helps loosen everything up and lets me think about what im going to do.

I think you've missed the more important part of what everyone was saying which was to get blood flowing to the target area (well put NeilR!) so a walk + a warm up set is the general concencus

i always work up to my max weight, this way i get that muscle fully warmed and blood flowing to it. It make take 3 sets before i hit my maximum weight. Then ill drop set all the way to where i started, i.e. the same amount of weight then comes of and the sets are repeated, basically everything is reversed after i hit my max set. No rest during drop setting.

I have a rather strange way of warming up but i find it very effective.

I do light, high rep squats to warm up. Even if im not training legs that day, i find it warms up the whole body nicely, gets the heart pumping.

Say i was benching that day, after the light squats i would do 2 or 3 warm up sets on the bench, then do my work sets.

Different, but works for me.

i do a couple of mins on an exercise bike then a warm up set of half the weight doing 10-14 reps. then full weight. - but to be honest im not sure if this is enough - i may start doing 2 warm up sets instead of the 1
