But you can only really do it so for so long so as zx9rjas said mix em up. If you just did dumbbells you would not be able to do it for too long as it involves to much concentration in balancing etc. When doing bench press (free weight) you only have to balance a bit and because of that you can bench an awful lot more. With a smith you dont need to think at all. |

| Under Construction | I suck at both, with a barbell i really struggle with 20kg but with dumbells i use 30kg (2x15kg) yet im doing them both in each workout and am starting no notice improvements in strength I would stick at just using the dumbells but i use the barbell aswell as its the only way im gonna get better at them ______________________ http://groups.msn.com/YourBodyYourTemple |

Yes technique is important but raising your dumbell press by 10 kg will have also have a significant effect on the weight you can barbell press. |

Due to the fact that with dumbells your pecs etc need to recruit more muscles and stabilise each arm independently. As YG said both will have an effect on each other. | Under Construction | well at the gym i do 2 sets of 8 reps with DB's without too much trouble, yet i sturggle to do a set of 6 with a barbell with less weight on it. I think its because the barbell isolates the muscles where as with the dumbells you can use more muscles to do the same thing ______________________ http://groups.msn.com/YourBodyYourTemple |

So if you can bench a 10kg plate either side you can bench 40kg. which is the equivalent of 20kg dumbells. Personally I find about a 5:4 ratio barbell:dumbell |

You're probably right though it sounds like a weight mis-calculation. RJ, the dumbells isolate the chest not the barbell. Due to the fact they are not fixed by a grip on a bar, this puts further stress on the pecs and thus making it harder J ______________________ 50% of Training is nutrition 50% of Training is not overtraining If you cant gain see the above. |
