Go for it bud, i am sure you will get as much benefit from one as you will from the other, apologies to Benj when i look at the post i wrote it seems a bit harsh, not intentional mate. P.s. Tissue if you are paying any sort of money to your local gym, make sure you maximise the benefits otherwise you dont get your money's worth.

No offence taken Dave.

The reason I don't recomend the smith is that fact it doesn't allow a natural path of movement, that can cause back problems, also free weight squats help build stabiliser muscles becuase you have to balance the weight.

I agree totally, Benj, also that free squatting stimulates growth and blood flow better, but its always the case that a percentage of individuals, prefer smith machines to squatting with bars or racks, its a funny old world.

Dumbbellls work the glutes and inner thighs more than the quads, you should wear a belt for all leg exercises because with legs you tend to push with your stomach full of air, this can actually widen your hips[ not good]
