Default Whey and its effect on insulin

Does taking whey protein effect your insulin levels? If so, to what extent?

I know that taking BCAAs has AN effect (but not a huge effect) on insulin, and if whey does truly spike insulin then is it best to stay away from it when follow low carb diets such as I am doing, with high fat, as the insulin could promote lipogenesis (fat storage)?

Taken from a post on Avant labs forums (see full thread here: http://www.avantlabs.com/forum/index...howtopic=22489 - see the post by 'trouble' ), they argue that whey will spike insulin, particularly : "The whey for breakfast will jack your insulin up like crazy with those oats."

Any thoughts?

Nick

I've read literature too stating protein consumption elevates insulin secretion, whey isolate is worst. I think this is where multiple sources are important in allowing the insuling to have something to work with as it courses through your bloodstream.

If thats true, then perhaps taking WPI alone is better than taking carbs with it PWO?

Interesting as i too follow a low carb diet, GI. If this is true then i would consider using egg whites mixed with liquid BCCA's.

Your thoughts.

Why isolate alone after training? The body craves glycogen and so will oxidise the whey into carbs, so isolate atfer training alone is pointless

then his whey will be oxidised into carbs to replenish glycogen, I disagree with Paul on that part because you cannot get fat from refuelling spent reserves, you get fat from overfuelling the body with energy you will not/cannot expend so it gets stored.

after a workout you can have around 60g carbs and none of it will end up as fat due to gastric emptying.

Without a doubt whey isolate causes an insulin response. From a diabetic point of view if i take whey isolate on its own for example say in the middle of the night i get a massive surge in blood sugar,,,in normal people this surge in blood sugar would result in an insulin response..So there you have it whey isolate definetly does affect blood sugars and so insulin levels

Its because its absorbed too fast this happens, I'm not a fan of pure isolate at all.

With regular whey which includea a samll amount of carbs and fat is definetly absorbed much slower and doesnt create as larga a spike in blood sugar levels
