Hi VinDerWeasel

You should sort out a diet plan before delving into supplements in my opinion.

Firstly you want to make sure that you are taking in enough protein, for example if you weight 150lbs, then ideally you want to be shooting for 1.5 x 150 = 225grams of protein per day.

Split this between 6 meals, from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep, trying to have 225/6 grams per meal (roughly 35 - 40 grams).

If you need to bump up a meal's protein intake, or don't have time to properly prepare a meal but need protein, the protein shake is a good option whilst losing weight. Its especially important to have high protein when dieting down because losing weight(fat) normally requires a sacrifice in terms of carbohydrates (and fat moderation), so you need to be hitting extra high protein to maintain your current muscle base.

Conclusion: Protein shakes are a good idea, as they are a convenient, tasty and cheap source of protein, and aren't loaded with calories for the amount of protein they contain.

Creatine for the sole purpose of maintaining existing muscle mass on a cut would also be beneficial, probably the CEE variety would be best to avoid water retention.

Nick

Nick has pretty much covered all you need at this stage Vin, just make sure you get a protein drink which is low in carbs and tastes nice, why the taste factor? Because if you are dieting a nice shake is a good treat.
