The gastrocnemius is one of the two major muscles in the lower leg, the other being the soleus. The gastrocs are worked primarily when you do calf raises with a straight leg. The soleus gets most of the work during seated (bent leg) calf raises.

thats definitely not a good thing!

do you have a history of knee problems at all? do you get the same ripping noises when doing a leg press instead of squat motion?

My knees are weak from a series of football injuries so i avoid doing squats.
Sean, you seen keen on football. Do you play alot or do alot olf running in general?
If so this may have weakened your knees.

Also, can anyone reccomend any other good exercises we can do?

yeah, love my football. Never had any knee injuries. Its only with squats that it happens, its weird because theres no pain, just a noise. Im just hoping it wears in? cheers sean

I can't say if it will wear in or not, but i do hope so.

Keep us posted on what happens. But remember when doing squats your knees take alot of pressure so if you feel pain from the core of the knee, stop!
