Whey protein is of course derived from milk.(Curds & Whey) and microbacterial spores breed like horny testosterone fuelled rabitts in it if it's not chilled.Bad bacteria too,hence the tangy smell.

I would strongly advise to washing that container in anti-bacterial washing up liquid unless you want gastric enteritis to accompany that cold Andy.
