i wouldnt think its unsafe,
but personally i wouldnt condone their use until you have really shown that you can fulfil your potential naturally. I have been training for almost 5 years, (although about 2 years really seriously) and i'm not even sure if i'm entirely justified in their use. It depends on your goals, and the level of respect that you aim to receive from the older more natural bodybuilders who bust their gut to get results without the use of hormones.
For example, one of my friends is considering their use after about 4 months of training.... my gut reaction was that it pissed me off, because in all likeliness he will probably put on lots of muscle mass to rival me in terms of strength. I saw this as annoying because I have stayed natural and built up years of training and he might achieve that all in a couple of months, almost like cheating.
However i'm considering the use now as a means to get to the next level, and overcome my growth plateau. If you are still experiencing good gains, or any gains at all (and 5kg on your benchpress every 4 - 8 weeks i still consider a worthwhile gain), then i would say you dont need them, and in all likeliness thats probably whats happening.
Again it depends on what you want. Are you aiming purely for being a meathead? or pursuing a hobby that may eventually lead to the use of hormonal substances but enjoying the strain and lifestyle change that is most important in your first few months whilst still making gains?
its up to you.
i think 6 months is far too little amount of time to be considering it.
