Essentially catabolism happens as soon as your body has negative calorie input, ie when you burn more than you take in.
If you are losing fat then you will lose muscle but things can be done to make the body retain more muscle while lowering bodyfat. Also you can make "teach" your body to use fat as its primary fuel source.
Unfortunately if you are in a catablollic state then muscle along with fat will be lost, you just have to be smart to insure that you are losing more of the latter. ______________________
