Bulking is eating enough to put on muscle and cutting is when you restict your calories slightly to lose fat.
It normally takes about a good 4-6 weeks before you will really notice some results, bit it can depend on genetics and drugs etc.
Stick to compound movements mainly whether building or cutting as they form the basics of any exercise plan and when you have been training for a while then look at isolation exercises to target your muscles from all angles.
