Default Full body or split routines?

Hi all,
Looking at training routines there are some people more inclined towards a full body workout per session stating that it maintains symmetrical muscle growth and provides a more demanding workout.

Most of the "modern" workouts suggest its best to split your workout into body parts to prevent overtraining and better muscle growth because you're pushing them harder per workout and then letting it rest for longer.

Anybody tried both types of routines and got any thoughts on it?
